John Robert Velásquez Scholarship

Fini and Gloria in the cotton fields

The John Robert Velásquez Scholarship was created at Roosevelt High School to pay homage to the memory of my only brother who was killed in Vietnam in 1968. My brother was proud to be a U.S. Marine and although he dropped out of junior high, he always dreamt of bettering himself. The main objective of the John Robert Velásquez Scholarsip is to increase the number of Chicanos/Latinos and African Americans in the University system. The scholarship is awarded once a year to a Roosevelt High School senior who plans on pursuing a college degree.
